Community Outreach
In keeping with our belief in Catholic social teachings and our commitment to social justice, we have expanded and integrated community service from grades 7 to 12. Students in the middle school complete a minimum of 10 hours per year and in the senior school they complete a minimum of 20 hours each year. The community service hours performed by grade 11 and 12 students must incorporate the Christian ideals of the “preferential option for the poor” and outreach to the disenfranchised members of our communities. We believe that such efforts help them to develop empathy and compassion, further contributing to our ideal of holistic education for each student.
Students have the opportunity to contribute to the school, local and wider communities through our outreach programme. Students take an active leadership role in fundraising initiatives and community service projects. To date our students have demonstrated their compassion and care for the community by participating in the Terry Fox Run, fundraising for an orphanage for girls in Haiti, creating Christmas baskets for the Catholic Children’s Aid Society, collecting shoes and food for Canadian Food for Children and for St. Felix Centre in Toronto.
On December 19th, Holy Name of Mary College School and St Michael's College School made a difference for the children of the St. Felix Centre. The Outreach Club at HNMCS organized a Christmas Party for underprivileged children in the heart of Toronto. A beautiful nativity pageant was performed by the children of the Centre. The two schools showed great commitment to helping those less fortunate by serving tables, singing Christmas songs, supervising the children, and preparing food. Many volunteers bonded with the children, and it was a wonderful experience. The volunteers took great pride in helping those less fortunate. We look forward to making this an annual tradition for Holy Name of Mary College School and St Michael's College School.
