Grade 5 and 6 Programme
The Junior School Programme
The grade 5 and 6 programme at Holy Name of Mary College School challenges students to develop themselves as young Catholic women; to become critical, reflective thinkers; to strive for academic excellence; to develop personal leadership skills and responsible citizenship.
Students benefit from small classes where their individual learning needs are met by dynamic and caring teachers. Emphasis on literacy and numeracy skills forms the foundation of our junior school programme and paves the way for success in all academic areas. Our positive, safe and supportive learning environment, with an emphasis on time management and effective study skills, helps students fulfill their academic potential. Our classroom environment is inquiry-based and provides students opportunities for hands-on experiences. Each student’s unique learning style is addressed and students are exposed to a variety of age-appropriate, authentic learning tasks.
Our belief in the importance of a balanced life guides our educational philosophy. While we provide an enriched learning environment in the classroom, we understand the importance of balance in a child’s life. Our curriculum is enriched by guest speakers, guest artists, and authors who share their expertise and personal and inspiring perspectives on a range of topics appropriate to the student’s age and level of maturity. Students participate in excursions designed to enhance the academic and the co-curricular programme.
Our unique chapel and co-curricular programme focuses on spiritual and personal development and helps our students develop leadership skills and confidence. We celebrate the Catholic faith through daily prayer, vibrant liturgies and class retreats. Our co-curricular programme is part of our daily schedule and includes athletics, arts, clubs, and academic support.
The academic subjects—Science and Technology, Math, Language Arts and Social Studies—are taught by a core teacher. In preparation for intermediate grades, students have a rotary timetable for the following subjects: French; Religion; Visual Art; Physical Education; Drama; Computers; Music.
