HNMCS Delegates take on Global Issues

Diplomacy, international relations and critically thinking about global issues are some of the areas the HNMCS Model United Nations (MUN) team has had the chance to explore this year through our weekly co-curricular sessions. While our Senior School members refined their skills and engaged in meaningful discussions, our Middle School members began with engaging in public speaking and debate activities to prepare them for the world of Model United Nations.

After a long hiatus from attending conferences, our senior school delegates had the opportunity to virtually participate in the University of Toronto Model United Nations conference on February 4th-6th. Led by co-presidents, Sofia Rutigliano ‘22 and Kaelen Parker ‘22, delegates prepared for a weekend of debate representing nations in the committees of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, the World Tourism Organization and the Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee along with a specialized committee inspired by Jane Austen’s classic novel “Pride and Prejudice”.

Our Middle School delegates also had the opportunity to participate in their inaugural conference as they took part in the Havergal College Model United Nations conference on the weekend of March 4th-6th. As some of the youngest members of their committees, our MS delegates rose to the challenge under the guidance of Sienna Albuquerque ‘23 leading them through their committee meetings in real-time. The girls were eager to get involved in discussions on issues related to disarmament challenges to global security, freedom of expression for journalists, the advancement of gender equality, and the promotion of equality within healthcare internationally.

The girls are eagerly looking forward to continuing to apply their skills and a return to in-person conferences this spring. We cannot wait to see what innovative solutions our future leaders will bring to the table.
