Black History Month at HNMCS

HNMCS' Culture Club hosted a series of events in February bringing awareness, teaching our community about black history and promoting inclusivity. In a year that highlighted inequity in the world, this dedicated group led by Sonnet Hines '22 and Alexandria Blackford '22, set out to bring topical issues to the forefront in a variety of ways to engage the HNMCS student body.

Their plans, while virtual, found ways to bring HNMCS students together to understand black history and showcasing. Motion Monday’s were taken over by the club, where Afro-Caribbean inspired dance workouts took place. Chapel periods throughout the month were used to look at different issues affecting black women. Announcements highlighted influential black figures.

The club also hosted a black focused movie evening, where students joined online to take part in a Teleparty viewing of Hidden Figures, followed by a discussion group about themes that arose in the film.
