CSI: HNMCS

Forensic science is used to resolve civil disputes and to solve criminal investigations. On April 4th, Constable Meriah Woodhouse, Scenes of Crime Specialist, and Constable Jamie Esposito, Forensic Identification Officer from the Forensic Identification Services Peel Regional Police visited our school club and demonstrated techniques used in a crime scene investigation to gather evidence. They also discussed general cases and daily encounters in their field of work.

On April 11th, the HNMCS Forensic science students travelled to the University of Toronto Mississauga and participated in a mock Crime Scene Investigation at the CSI house. Students collected evidence including blood samples and fingerprints. They also had the opportunity to identify human versus animal bones in the anthropology lab.

During the inhouse Forensic labs at HNMCS, students learn to identify hair samples, conduct chemical analysis, learn fingerprinting techniques and review human anatomy to differentiate between animal and human bones. Forensics is an interesting field of study where students get to explore sample investigations in a class setting while learning about potential jobs and opportunities in STEM careers.
