Eco Excellence

The StargazerNews

Fall has been a busy time for the HNMCS Eco Team. We are so glad to be back to in-person meetings which are always filled with sustainability ideas, environmental plans, and a lot of laughs.

OCTOBER

HNMCS is once again participating in the year-long Ontario Battery Recycling Challenge. This whole school campaign that would not be possible without the community coming together and making sure all batteries are recycled safely. House points and a dress-down day for the house that collects the most batteries will be awarded. This drive ends in May 2022, so keep those batteries coming.

Waste Reduction Week took place from October 18-22. Each day announcements and posters were sent out to raise awareness about different ways to reduce waste in our everyday lives.

Andrea Rowe, Director of Sustainability from the Halton Environmental Network joined us for a day of planting. The Eco Team was given the opportunity to plant various pollinator and native species plants outside, to mulch the garden, and to plant tulip bulbs. We are very thankful for this partnership as Ms. Rowe will be back in the spring for more planting.

Take Me Outside Day was once again a huge success. Students across the grades had the opportunity to learn outside the walls of their classrooms.

NOVEMBER

On November 10, our yearly yard cleanup transformed into a Nature Walk and a Community Cleanup. Students in various grades were tasked with walking and cleaning up certain areas in and around the school. Not only was litter picked up but all broken branches were piled together to prepare the yard for the snowy months ahead.

The HNMCS Electronics Drive took place during the second half of November, to help bring awareness to the importance of safely disposing off unwanted and used electronics.

A Bottle Cap Drive is currently underway. We are collecting bottle caps in all sizes and colors to be used in creating a colorful mural towards the end of the school year. House points will be awarded.
