Skills Building in Science!

Providing students with hands-on laboratory science experiences engage students and promotes the development of problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Laboratory inquiries help our students connect the textbook theory to the real world applications as they gain exposure to the biological or chemical reactions and develop their confidence in bench-top techniques. These activities are essential for learning chemistry and improving science literacy which can inspire girls to further their education in university science and high-technology STEM careers.

AMGEN/UTM Biotechnology Experience at HNMCS

The AMGEN Biotech Experience supported by UTM continues to be a successful enhancement to our Gr.12 University preparatory program. Students discover how to use restriction enzymes to cut plasmids and create DNA fragments that will be joined to make the recombinant plasmids. Then students use gel electrophoresis technology for the verification of the recombinant plasmid. With the completion of the week series of biotechnology university-level labs, the biology students strengthen their technical lab skills and discover new opportunities in STEM-based careers.
