Love begins at home

Giving Tuesday

Holy Name of Mary College School (HNMCS) students participated in a full day of dynamic service acts for Giving Tuesday this year. They truly embraced the opportunity to celebrate in our shared humanity by serving those in the HNMCS community and ministry, their home, the less fortunate, and the environment.

There is a popular saying that goes “Love begins at home”, and the girls thoughtfully lived this out by serving their family through a cooked meal, cleaning and/or organizing. Next, they looked for opportunities to help the environment by recycling old items at home, collecting garbage or shoveling snow in their neighbourhood. Beyond just their homes and neighbourhoods, the girls served the community by promoting digital awareness of their favourite charities, and collected food or clothing to donate to a local charity or church. The senior school girls also acted as leaders and built fellowship with the middle school girls by facilitating creative craft projects.

At the end of the day the girls served the ministry by taking time to recognize and connect with our beloved Felician sisters by writing thoughtful letters. The girls were constantly encouraged to reflect on the meaning of each of their service initiatives and to tie it back to our founding core values of respect, compassion, justice and transformation. Despite the unprecedented times of 2020, these Giving Tuesday service activities allowed the girls to remember that we can still make a difference and reflect Christ’s love in big and small acts of charity.

I have been thinking about helping people in the community or society. However, I don’t usually have the chance to do it! Today’s activities really helped me. I feel so happy and with a sense of fulfillment!
