Opportunities Soar at MUN

The StargazerNews

As the weather heats up outside, the opportunities for the HNMCS Model United Nations (MUN) team are also beginning to soar! The HNMCS MUN club strives to provide members with opportunities to engage in public speaking, explore global issues and think critically to propose resolutions to these challenges. We are excited to share what our delegates have been up to this spring.

On Saturday, April 23rd, two of our novice delegates represented HNMCS virtually at the XVII Appleby College Model United Nations Conference (ACMUN). Sienna Albuquerque ‘23 and Meredith Steep ‘24 put their public speaking skills to the test as they took part in a variety of discussions including global advocacy for children’s education, and creating a foundation for suicide prevention. A special recognition was given to Meredith Steep by her committee, as she earned “The Outstanding Delegate” award for her representation of Rwanda on the UNICEF committee. This award is given out to members of a committee who the chair and co-chair believe should be recognized for fantastic preparation for the conference, great debate and work within the committee sessions.

To conclude the 2021/22 MUN season, four HNMCS delegates returned to in-person conferences at the Haig Model United Nations Conference in Toronto. Hosted by Earl Haig Secondary School on Saturday, May 14th, our delegates continued to take part in traditional MUN committees discussing and defending the human rights of marginalized groups, and tackling issues within the global health structure. In addition, graduating delegate Anjali Sharma '22 took a step back in time to 1792 and was challenged with the task of traversing French Revolution-Era Paris in the shoes of Marie-Antionette. We are so proud of our student's efforts, and are ecstatic that this session of Model UN could end on a high note.

Although conference season has come to a close, club members are keeping busy during weekly meetings as we begin preparations to welcome new members next year and come up with new and exciting goals for Model UN at HNMCS!
