The Immersive Gatsby Experience

The StargazerNews

On April 20th the grade 11 English class recreated the beauty and fame of The Great Gatsby by transforming our school gymnasium into a classic 1920’s speakeasy. Students worked in various teams to research and mimic the fashion, art, décor, music, dance and food commonly displayed at a Gatsby party. After reading and reviewing F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, the grade 11 class brought history to life in whimsical fashion.

To kick-off this interactive experience students inall grades were provided personalised invitations - complete with classic speakeasy password - and encouraged to venture down to the gymnasium to immerse themselves in the glitz and glamour of the roaring twenties! Guests snacked on classic hors d’oeuvres, learned the slang of the twenties, took photos behind a glittering golden backdrop, and took in a lovely rendition of the Charleston. Students re-enacted skits portraying the likeness of Al Capone, Coco Chanel and Charlie Chaplin as visitors participated in guess who and character matching games. Staff and students were fit with personal flapper headbands as they moved through the stations, learning in fun and interactive ways.

This immersive experience encouraged discussion, engagement and collaboration as students shared ideas and learnt together. We cannot wait to see what our current grade 10s have in store for our 2023 Gatsby Gala!
