Big School Advantages, in a smaller school setting

The StargazerNews

By definition we’re a smaller school, but that’s a big advantage. We are very community focused and we get to know the names of all of our students. What we want you to know is that being a smaller school does not affect how we offer programmes, quite to the contrary, as we offer many activities and opportunities that some defined large schools do not. You ask, what does this look like and how is this possible? It starts with our 4 House multigrade system. Every girl is put into a house that becomes a part of her Holy Name of Mary experience.

Academically, it is seen in class sizes that range from 10-22 students, which means more personalized and small group attention for your daughter. Community building starts in the classroom, and HNMCS’s tight-knit classes foster community that translates into optimal learning environments. Malcolm Gladwell in his book David and Goliath shows that attending smaller education institutions allows students to succeed because they have a stronger sense of belonging. The sense of ‘home’ that HNMCS provides allows your daughter to flourish in her studies.

Holy Name of Mary College School also offers a full slate of co-curricular opportunities ranging from athletics, to the arts, to STEAM initiatives. Imagine your daughter on a varsity team that will create bonds that will last her a lifetime, partly due to coaches who have the opportunity to build those bonds through the close attention they pay to each athlete. Imagine your daughter excelling in choir because of the individual attention she receives from the choir leader. Imagine your daughter helping to lead the Green Wave across our country with other like minded students. Imagine your daughter getting a competitive edge as a member of the HNMCS Medical Science programme. HNMCS Med Sci works with leading universities and medical industry leaders from around the world. It is facilitated by HNMCS faculty in ways that build your daughter’s confidence stemming from HNMCS’s ‘family feel’, so she can optimize this global learning opportunity in the health science field.

Being a small school also makes HNMCS agile and nimble. We are able to respond to the latest education trends with greater ease than larger institutions. In the Covid-19 pandemic, our size allowed us to adjust to the latest health situation with minimal disruption to our academic or co-curricular planning, ensuring the safety of our staff and students. We are able to employ creative tech solutions in ways larger institutions can’t so that your daughter is always on the cutting edge.

Don’t let your daughter fall through the cracks. Don’t let her be just a player on the team roster or another member of the band. Don’t let her lose out on educational strategies designed to have her succeed in today’s world because of a big school that can’t pivot. Send her to the small school with big advantages, where your daughter is more than just a number. Send her to the small school that provides joy for our girls - and the parents love it too. We want all of our girls to be a part of this - to be included in all HNMCS community activities and to feel a part of something larger than herself.
